Prepare

Are You Ready for Carstensz?

Carstensz Pyramid is a technical rock climb on fixed ropes at altitude. Honest preparation matters.

01

Endurance

Long climbing days at altitude. Build steady endurance with back-to-back training days before you come.

02

Rope skills

The summit route is climbed on fixed ropes. Practise ascending, rappelling and changeovers with your own harness and devices.

03

Altitude

Base camp sits at about 4,200–4,300 m and the summit at 4,884 m. The helicopter gains the height at once, so previous altitude experience helps.

04

Time

Allow enough months to train, and keep your travel plans flexible for the contingency days.

05

Insurance

Rescue insurance is required, and travel insurance covering technical mountaineering is strongly recommended.
